Team Race Sailing

Team racing, as suggested by the name is a team sport. The idea is to work together to get your team to win, even if this means sacrificing your personal position for the benefit of the team.  6 boats compete in the race, 3 boats from each team.  In team racing Firefly’s are often used.  They are small manoeuvrable boats that handle well.  As the boats in the race are all the same there is no need for handicapping and this makes for a level playing field.  For example, with handicapping a fast boat could gain advantage if another boat was required to carry out a penalty turn, this boat would have little hope of catching the faster boat. This would not make for close racing which is exciting to compete in and observe.  With every team in the same type of boat, victory is down to the ability of the team.  The team with the lowest point score always take first place at the end of a competition.  For example, if 3 boats finished in positions 1, 2, and 3 then that team would win (on 6 points) over another team which came in positions 4, 5, and 6 (15 points in total).

The RUSC team races many different universities all over the country such as Exeter, Bath, Portsmouth and Southampton.  This gives us a chance to rank our team on a national level amongst the best university teams in the country.  We train at Burghfield Sailing Club every Wednesday afternoon. During these sessions, we practice team racing techniques and improve the standard of the team overall to help us achieve further success in the future.
