The Code of Conduct

Reading University Sailing Club (RUSC) is affiliated to the Royal Yachting Association (RYA), national governing body of sailing, and the British University Sailing Association (BUSA). The club provides both the opportunity to train for and participate in Team Racing events against other Universities, and instruction by qualified RYA instructors. This code of conduct includes information about the Health and Safety policies of the club, as well as details of the training and coaching it provides and the expected conduct of every member.

Health and Safety

  1. Every RUSC member is expected to wear appropriate clothing whilst participating in sailing. The club has some kit which members can borrow who do not posses their own (see Recommended Gear). The following either must be worn or is highly recommended;
  • A Buoyancy Aid (at all times)
  • A Wetsuit (October to April)
  • A Spray Top or Breathable Waterproof Jacket
  • Appropriate Footwear with Good Grip

All members should also bring a change of clothes and a towel each time they participate in sailing.

  1. The committee will assess weather conditions prior to each outing. If it is deemed too dangerous to sail, the trip will be either postponed or cancelled.
  2. There will be at least one qualified first aider on every trip to ensure the safety of members.
  3. A first aid kit will be available at each trip.
  4. There will be at least two first aiders as members of the club at all times.
  5. There will be at least two RYA Qualified safety boat drivers on each trip.
  6. There will be a safety boat on the water prior to any boats being launched.
  7. The committee trip leaders reserve the right to refuse participation to any individual they deem to be unsuitable for the trip. They may assess the health, fitness, condition or morale of all individuals before the trip.

Instruction

  1. The club provides coaching for the team on a weekly basis, from either the official coach or experienced members (suitably qualified to RYA standards). Instruction will be carried out for other members where required, by other experienced members.
  2. The ratio of club members to instructors varies depending on the craft used and the course itself. The club will abide by the guidelines of the RYA (generally between six and eight to one).

Conduct of Individual Members

  1. As a club we expect total co-operation of members and respect for decisions made by the committee for the benefit of the club and its members.
  2. Members should remember that on trips or at competitions they are representing both the club and the University of Reading and should act accordingly.
  3. Members should understand that in joining they are part of the Sailing Club community and therefore should respect and support all other members.
  4. As affiliated members of Burghfield Sailing Club all RUSC members should respect members of BSC and adhere to all there rules and guidelines laid down by BSC.
